Hotel Spa Towels: A Buying Guide for Wellness Facilities

Spa towels have a completely different technical and experiential profile from bathroom or pool towels. In the context of a hotel spa, the towel is not merely a functional item: it is part of the welcome ritual to the space, a signal of the establishment's quality and a component of the sensory experience the guest comes to seek. The difference between a well-chosen spa towel and an unsuitable one is immediately perceptible: in the weight when the guest picks it up, in the feel when they press it against their skin after a treatment, in the visual appearance when it is folded on the treatment table or stacked in the changing room.

This guide explains what technical characteristics a professional spa towel must have, which formats are suitable for each area of the facility, how to manage stock in a high-use environment and what distinguishes a quality spa towel from a conventional one.

Why Spa Towels Need Their Own Specifications

The spa is the area of the hotel where the towel has the greatest visibility and the greatest impact on the perception of luxury. Unlike the guest room bathroom, where the towel is used in private, in the spa the towel accompanies the guest throughout their journey across the different zones: changing room, wet area, treatment room, relaxation area. The guest uses it several times, carries it with them, sees it alongside other guests' towels and compares it — consciously or not — with experiences in other spas.

This means that selection criteria for spa towels are more demanding than for standard bathroom towels:

Higher weight for a luxury feel. The spa towel must convey a weight and volume sensation the guest associates with quality and care. The minimum advisable weight for a spa is 500 g/m², and in premium facilities it is common to work with weights of 600 to 700 g/m².

Greater softness to the touch. The guest's skin at the spa is often more sensitive than in everyday use — from the effect of heat, moisture or treatments — and the towel touching that skin must be particularly soft.

Better absorbency in less time. After a steam bath, a contrast shower or a wet treatment, the guest needs to dry off quickly and comfortably.

Towel Formats in Spa Facilities

Large Bath Sheet (70x140 cm or 80x150 cm)

This is the main spa towel, used to wrap the body after baths and treatments. In upper-category spas, the 80x150 cm or even 90x160 cm format is the standard: it provides complete body coverage, allows comfortable wrapping and conveys a generosity that the guest associates with the luxury of the establishment.

Hand or Facial Towel (30x50 cm or 40x60 cm)

In the spa, the hand towel has a different use from the guest room: it is used primarily in the treatment room to clean the therapist's face or hands during the service, or to cover areas of the guest's body during the treatment. It must be particularly soft as it comes into contact with facial skin.

Pedicure or Foot Bath Towel (50x70 cm)

A specific format for drying feet after foot baths and pedicure treatments. Its compact size makes the therapist's work easier and its use is exclusive to this area, which simplifies stock identification and differentiated laundering protocols.

Treatment Sheet or Massage Table Linen

Although technically not a towel, the treatment sheet is a textile item for exclusive spa use that shares many of the quality criteria of the spa towel: appropriate weight, softness, absorbency and resistance to frequent laundering. Essential oils and treatment products that saturate spa treatment sheets require specific laundering protocols to be fully removed without damaging the fibre.

Materials for Spa Towels: Quality Over Economy

Long-Staple Combed Cotton

This is the reference material for quality spa towels. The long staple of combed cotton produces a softer, more lustrous and more resistant loop than standard short-staple cotton. The difference in feel between a 600 g/m² combed cotton spa towel and a standard cotton one of the same weight is immediately perceptible to the guest.

Egyptian Cotton and Supima Cotton

Certified Egyptian cotton and American Supima are the highest-quality materials available in spa towels. Their extra-long fibres produce an exceptionally soft feel and lustrous appearance that is maintained over hundreds of washes. They are the reference materials in luxury spas and 5-star hotels where the towel actively forms part of the brand positioning.

Cotton-Bamboo or Cotton-Modal Blend

Cotton-bamboo or cotton-modal blends — usually in 70/30 or 60/40 ratios — combine the absorbency of cotton with the natural softness and sheen of bamboo or modal. They are common options in spas with an eco or natural wellness positioning.

Colour in Spa Towels

White: Visible Cleanliness and Luxury Image

White is the standard colour for spa towels for the same reasons as room linen: it communicates cleanliness immediately and verifiably, allows industrial bleaching to maintain that impeccable appearance over time and is consistent with the wellness space aesthetic.

Neutral Colours and Brand Palette

Some spas with a very defined visual identity use towels in neutral tones coordinated with the space's décor. This option reinforces brand consistency but requires more careful laundry management without chlorine bleaching and colour-coded stock control that adds operational complexity.

Stock Management in the Spa: Specific Criteria

Higher towel-to-guest ratio. In a spa, each guest may use between 3 and 6 pieces during their visit. Stock calculation must account for this multiple-use ratio per visitor.

Shorter wash cycles. Spa towels are laundered more frequently than room towels because intensive daily use — multiple guests, multiple zones, contact with oils and treatment products — makes a complete change at the end of each session or each day essential.
