Hotel amenities comparison: wall-mounted cartridge dispenser alongside a set of individual single-use shampoo, shower gel and conditioner bottles in a four-star hotel bathroom

Dispensers vs Single-Use Amenities in Hotels: Which Format Suits Your Property

The choice between wall-mounted dispensers and single-use guest amenities is one of the most consequential operational decisions in hospitality, affecting costs, perceived hygiene, guest experience and sustainability commitments simultaneously. There is no single right answer: each format has clear advantages depending on the hotel category, guest profile and housekeeping model.

This guide analyses both formats in detail — wall dispensers and individual hotel toiletries — and offers practical criteria for making the right decision for your property type.

Comparison table of dispensers versus single-use amenities for hotels: operational cost, hygiene, sustainability, personalisation and housekeeping management criteria by hotel category

What Are Hotel Amenity Dispensers

Wall dispensers or dispenser systems are fixed units installed in the shower or at the washbasin, containing shower gel, shampoo and conditioner in refillable vessels or with replaceable cartridges. Guests dispense their portion via a pump or lever.

There are two main types:

Refillable dispensers: housekeeping staff top up the reservoirs from bulk product containers. Cost per use is very low, but they require a strict cleaning protocol and product control to prevent cross-contamination.

Cartridge dispensers: the sealed cartridge is replaced when empty. More hygienic than the refillable model and with less risk of handling error. Cost per use sits between refillable dispensers and single-use products.

What Are Single-Use Hotel Amenities

Single-use hotel amenities are the individual one-use bottles — shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion, hand soap — placed in the guest bathroom and replenished at each service. This is the traditional hospitality format and the one that offers the greatest flexibility in presentation and personalisation.

Comparison: Dispensers vs Single-Use Amenities

Operational Cost

Dispensers: cost per use is significantly lower than single-use products. Bulk product carries a very low unit cost, and eliminating individual packaging reduces material expenditure substantially. In high-occupancy properties, the annual saving can be considerable.

Single-use: higher cost per unit, particularly in mid-to-upper categories where presentation matters. Added to this is waste: industry studies indicate that 30 to 40 per cent of the content in single-use amenities is never consumed — guests use the product once or twice and leave the bottle partially full.

Cost advantage: dispensers.

Hygiene and Guest Perception

Refillable dispensers: hygiene perception can be negative if the dispenser is not perfectly clean or if the bulk product is not clearly identified. Some guests distrust refillable dispensers, uncertain whether the contents are correct or the vessel is clean.

Cartridge dispensers: perception improves markedly over the refillable model. The sealed cartridge conveys greater confidence in hygiene standards.

Single-use: hygiene perception is at its highest — each guest receives a new, closed and sealed bottle. This format generates the greatest trust, particularly in upper and luxury categories or at times of heightened hygiene awareness.

Hygiene perception advantage: single-use (especially in upper and luxury categories).

Sustainability and Regulation

This is the factor reshaping the market: the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUP) and the national regulations derived from it are progressively restricting or adding cost to individual plastic packaging. In the UK, the Plastic Packaging Tax (introduced April 2022 and uprated annually) adds direct cost pressure to single-use plastic containers below a 30 per cent recycled content threshold — a levy hotels must account for when sourcing amenities. The trajectory across Europe and the UK is clearly towards reducing single-use plastics.

Dispensers: the most sustainable option in terms of plastic reduction. A 100-room hotel with 75 per cent occupancy can eliminate more than 50,000 plastic packaging units per year by switching from single-use to dispensers.

Single-use: sustainability improvements are possible through compressed cardboard, recycled plastic or biodegradable material packaging, but the environmental footprint per unit will always exceed that of a dispenser.

Sustainability advantage: dispensers.

Personalisation and Brand Experience

Single-use: offers the greatest personalisation flexibility — logo, brand colours, bottle shape, texture, fragrance, hotel name. This is the preferred format for boutique hotels, properties with a strong brand identity and luxury categories where the amenity detail is part of the differentiating guest experience.

Dispensers: personalisation is possible but more limited — the dispenser unit can carry the hotel logo, but the level of personalisation falls short of single-use. In return, some premium dispenser brands (Rituals, Molton Brown, L'Occitane) allow the brand experience to be associated with a recognised name.

Personalisation advantage: single-use.

Operational Ease and Housekeeping Management

Refillable dispensers: require a rigorous cleaning protocol, bulk product stock control and housekeeping staff training. The risk of product mix-up or contamination, while low with a correct protocol in place, does exist.

Cartridge dispensers: simpler to manage — staff simply swap the cartridge when empty, without handling bulk product.

Single-use: the simplest to manage — visual restocking at each room service, with no additional complexity. The drawback is the larger stock volume and waste to manage.

Operational ease advantage: single-use (cartridge dispensers come close).

Which Format Suits Each Hotel Category

Hostel, 1–2 Star and Budget Accommodation

The refillable dispenser is the most efficient option. Minimal operational cost and no expectation of premium presentation make this format well suited to the category. The initial investment in dispensers is recovered quickly.

3-Star Hotel

A transitional category. Branded cartridge dispensers offer a solution that combines controlled cost with adequate hygiene perception. Single-use products remain valid when the format and presentation are carefully considered.

4-Star Hotel

Branded cartridge dispensers (Rituals, L'Occitane, quality own-label) are the dominant trend. They allow cost control, fulfilment of sustainability commitments and a consistent brand experience. Single-use products are reserved for premium room categories or welcome amenity sets.

5-Star and Luxury Hotels

Own-brand luxury or recognised luxury-brand single-use amenities remain the standard. The sensory experience of the individual amenity — bottle design, fragrance, product texture — is an integral part of the guest experience. Some luxury properties combine ultra-premium dispensers for core shower products with high-end individual amenities at the washbasin.

Market Trends

The global trend is clearly towards dispensers, driven by three converging factors: regulatory pressure on single-use plastics, the sustainability commitments of major hotel groups and operational cost reduction. Marriott, Hilton, IHG and other international chains have announced the phased elimination of single-use plastic amenities in favour of dispensers.

For the independent and boutique segment, the decision is more nuanced: brand identity and differentiating guest experience carry as much weight as cost, and single-use amenities in sustainable materials remain a valid and differentiating option.
