Hotel Pillows: A Buying Guide for Professional Hospitality

The pillow is the bed item with the greatest direct impact on the guest's sleep quality. The mattress determines overall body support, the sheets determine the feel against the skin, but the pillow determines the position of the head and neck during sleep, and an unsuitable pillow — too high, too low, too firm or too soft — can ruin the quality of the guest's rest regardless of the quality of the rest of the bed.

This guide explains which types of filling exist for hotel pillows, which firmness levels are most suitable for hospitality, how to manage the pillow offering for guests with different preferences and how to calculate the stock needed.

Why the Pillow Is the Hardest Bed Item to Get Right in Hospitality

The pillow has a characteristic no other bed item shares: the guest's preference is completely subjective and varies enormously from person to person. A guest who sleeps on their side needs a high, firm pillow to keep the spine aligned; a guest who sleeps on their back needs a lower, medium pillow; a guest who sleeps on their front needs a very flat pillow or none at all.

No hotel can get it right with a single pillow for all its guests. The smartest strategy is not to choose the "perfect" pillow — which does not exist — but to offer options and communicate them to the guest.

Types of Hotel Pillow Filling

Down or Feather

Down — the natural filling from the breast of geese or ducks — is the most prestigious filling in luxury hotel pillows. Extraordinarily light, with an excellent shape recovery and a cloud-like feel that many guests directly associate with the luxury hotel bed.

Advantages: incomparable feel, high longevity when properly cared for, washable. Disadvantages: high unit cost, can trigger allergic reactions in guests with a down allergy, pillow protector is essential and specific laundering protocols are required.

Firmness: down produces naturally soft and mouldable pillows.

Down Alternative (Hollow-Fibre)

Hollow-fibre — usually polyester — is the most common filling in hospitality across all categories. It mimics the properties of down at a significantly lower cost, is hypoallergenic, withstands industrial laundering well and is available in a wide range of firmness levels.

Advantages: controlled cost, hypoallergenic, washable at high temperatures, wide availability of firmness levels. Disadvantages: lower longevity than down, can clump with use and repeated laundering requiring more frequent replacement.

Firmness: available in soft, medium and firm depending on fibre density and type.

Memory Foam

Memory foam filling adapts its shape to the guest's head and neck in response to body heat, distributing pressure more evenly than fibre or down fillings. It is the filling with the greatest support capacity and the most indicated for guests with neck problems.

Advantages: excellent cervical support, high durability, does not clump. Disadvantages: greater weight than fibre fillings, can retain more heat than down or fibre, cannot be washed in a conventional washing machine — requires dry cleaning or airing.

Latex

Latex filling — natural or synthetic — is an alternative to memory foam with similar support properties but with greater bounce and less heat retention. Naturally antimicrobial.

Advantages: firm support, antimicrobial, durable, does not retain heat like memory foam. Disadvantages: high weight, high cost, can trigger reactions in guests with a latex allergy.

Firmness: The Most Relevant Criterion for the Guest

Soft: suitable for front sleepers or guests who prefer a mouldable pillow. Low profile.

Medium: the most universal firmness level. Suitable for side and back sleepers. Medium profile.

Firm: suitable for side sleepers needing greater cervical support, or for guests with broader necks and shoulders. High profile.

The Pillow Strategy in Hospitality: Multiple-Option Offering

The most efficient practice in mid-to-upper-category hospitality is to offer two standard pillows on the bed and have alternative pillows available on request.

On the bed: two medium-firmness pillows as standard. This is the most universal configuration and the one that satisfies the majority of guests.

On request: soft, firm or specific-filling pillows (memory foam, latex, down alternative) available in the room or at reception on request.

Some upper-category hotels offer what is known as a "pillow menu" — a card with the available options left in the room — which communicates the service proactively and generates a perception of care and personalisation that guests value highly.

Sizes: Correspondence with the Pillowcase

  • 50x70 cm: the standard size in most European hotels
  • 50x90 cm: the longer size, common in hotels with a superior comfort positioning
  • 65x65 cm: the European square size, common in Central Europe and some design establishments

How Many Pillows Does the Hotel Need

Per single bed: 2 standard pillows + 1 spare pillow in linen room stock.

Per double bed: 4 standard pillows + 2 spare pillows in stock.

For the pillow menu service: at minimum 1–2 alternative pillows per 10 rooms, in soft and firm firmness in addition to the standard pillows.

Replacement: hollow-fibre pillows require replacement every 1–2 years with intensive hospitality use. Latex or memory foam pillows can last 5–8 years with proper care.
