Hotel Towel Types: A Complete Guide to Equipping Your Property

Towels are one of the elements that most directly shape a guest's impression of a property's quality. An inadequate towel — too small, too thin or rough to the touch — creates a negative impression that is difficult to recover from, while a quality towel contributes directly to ratings on booking platforms and to repeat business.

This guide covers the essential towel types in a hotel, their standard dimensions, uses and the criteria for selecting the right provision for each category and type of property.

Comparative table of hotel towel types: bath sheet 70×140 cm, hand towel 50×100 cm, flannel 30×30 cm, bath mat 50×80 cm and pool towel 80×160 cm, with recommended weight in gsm and provision by hotel star rating

Why Towel Selection Is a Strategic Decision

Towels are among the highest-turnover items in any hotel. They are laundered several times a week, come into direct contact with guests' skin and are one of the first things a guest handles on arrival. Selection should therefore not be based on unit price alone, but on total cost over the working life of the item: absorbency, resistance to commercial laundering, and the ability to hold their weight and colour after dozens of cycles.

From the guest's perspective, towels communicate:

  • Category level: a towel at 500 gsm or above reads as premium; below 400 gsm, the feel can fall short of what guests expect at a quality property.
  • Hygiene: white remains the industry standard in most hotels precisely because it conveys cleanliness and allows the condition of the linen to be checked at a glance.
  • Attention to detail: the way towels are folded in the room, the presence of an embroidered stripe or logo, and the uniformity across pieces all reflect the property's level of care.

The Essential Towel Types in a Hotel

Bath Sheet

The bath sheet is the centrepiece of the bathroom provision and the towel guests will use to dry off after a shower or bath. The standard size ranges from 70 × 140 cm to 70 × 150 cm, though upmarket properties commonly use larger formats up to 80 × 160 cm.

Recommended weight: between 500 and 600 gsm for 4- and 5-star hotels; between 400 and 500 gsm for mid-range properties or those with higher turnover (serviced apartments, budget hotels).

Standard provision: 2 bath sheets per double room; 1 per single room.

Hand Towel

The hand towel complements the bath sheet for drying hands at the basin. The standard format is 50 × 100 cm, though luxury properties sometimes use slightly larger sizes (50 × 110 cm).

Recommended weight: between 400 and 500 gsm. As it is laundered more frequently than the bath sheet — guests use it several times throughout the day — resistance to commercial laundering is a particularly important criterion here.

Standard provision: 2 hand towels per double room; 1 per single room.

Flannel (Face Cloth)

The flannel, also called a face cloth or wash cloth, is a small-format item — typically 30 × 30 cm — used for facial cleansing and personal hygiene. It is a standard inclusion in 4- and 5-star properties and in full-service hotels.

Unlike some Continental markets where the flannel is considered non-negotiable even in mid-range properties, its inclusion in UK hotels varies more widely by category and guest profile. That said, its absence is increasingly flagged in guest reviews at 4-star level, and its presence at 3-star level is a straightforward differentiator.

Recommended weight: between 400 and 500 gsm.

Standard provision: 1 to 2 per person.

Bath Mat

The bath mat is not strictly a towel, but it forms part of the bathroom's textile provision and shares many of its characteristics: terry construction, absorbent material, and the need to withstand frequent high-temperature laundering.

The standard size is between 50 × 80 cm and 60 × 90 cm. In upmarket properties, it is typically coordinated in colour with the rest of the bathroom linen.

Recommended weight: between 800 and 1,200 gsm, since its primary function is water absorption from the floor and slip resistance underfoot.

Standard provision: 1 per bathroom, changed according to the room servicing protocol.

Pool or Beach Towel

In hotels with pool, spa or beach access, the pool towel is a distinct item from the room provision. Its characteristics differ significantly:

  • Larger dimensions: typically between 80 × 160 cm and 90 × 180 cm, to be used as a sun-lounger cover.
  • Greater colourfastness: continuously exposed to chlorine, salt and sunlight, the dyes must be resistant to these agents.
  • Distinctive design: many properties opt for pool towels with a stripe pattern or house branding that sets them visually apart from room linen and makes stock control more straightforward.

Recommended weight: between 400 and 500 gsm. An excessively high weight makes drying between uses more difficult when managed in outdoor spaces.

Management: in higher-volume properties, pool towels are commonly managed on a deposit system — the guest hands in a key card or token in exchange for a towel — which reduces losses and simplifies stock tracking.

Gym or Spa Towel

Hotels with fitness or spa facilities typically provide a dedicated towel for these areas, distinct from room and pool provision. The format is more compact — between 40 × 80 cm and 50 × 100 cm — at a mid-range weight that balances absorbency with ease of handling.

In upmarket spas and wellness centres, a larger wrap towel or spa robe towel is also common, offering generous coverage and exceptional softness.

Towel Provision by Hotel Category

The recommended minimum provision varies by property category:

Bath sheet 1–2 per person 2 per person 2–3 per person
Hand towel 1 per person 2 per person 2 per person
Flannel Optional 1–2 per person 2 per person

Selection Criteria for Hotel Towels

Fabric

Combed long-staple cotton (Egyptian cotton, quality Turkish cotton) is the benchmark for upmarket properties: it offers softness, good absorbency and durability through repeated laundering. Cotton-polyester blends (typically 80/20) are more economical and well suited to higher-turnover properties, at the cost of a slightly less plush handle.

Weight (gsm)

Weight determines the feel, absorbency and perceived quality of the towel. Higher gsm means greater absorbency and a softer, more substantial feel — but also longer drying times in the laundry and a higher cost per item. The choice must balance the property's category with its laundering capacity and rotation frequency.

Commercial Laundry Resistance

Hotel towels are washed regularly at 60–90°C with industrial detergents and, in many cases, periodically bleached. Fabrics and construction must be suited to this: stable terry loops, heat-sealed seams or borders that do not fray after dozens of cycles.

Colour and Finish

White remains the dominant choice across most hotel categories, for its versatility, ease of hygiene checking and compatibility with any interior scheme. Coloured borders or jacquard stripes offer a way to add a house identity without complicating laundry management.

Managing Hotel Towel Stock

The standard rule in hospitality is to hold three sets of towels per room: one in use, one in the laundry and one in reserve. This ratio ensures availability throughout the laundering cycle, particularly during peak occupancy or in properties with an on-site laundry of limited capacity.

Continuous rotation and commercial laundering accelerate wear. It is advisable to establish a periodic replacement schedule based on the cumulative number of washes per item — many operators set 100 to 150 washes as the useful life benchmark for a mid-range towel — and to maintain a replenishment stock of between 10 and 15 per cent of the active inventory.
