Towel laundering is the laundry operation with the greatest impact on the durability and appearance of hotel textiles. A quality towel can deteriorate in a few weeks if the laundering protocol is incorrect, and a standard towel can last for years if the protocol is right. Laundering is, alongside fabric quality at the point of purchase, the factor that most determines the actual service life of a hotel towel.
This guide explains the key parameters for washing hotel towels — temperature, spin speed, detergent, fabric conditioner — the most frequent mistakes that shorten towel service life and how to organise the laundry process to maximise efficiency and quality of result.

Why the Laundering Protocol Matters More Than It Seems
Most hotel establishments treat towel laundering as a routine operation without critical parameters. This is a mistake. Incorrect towel laundering generates:
Loss of absorbency: cotton fibres damaged by excessive temperature, aggressive spinning or unsuitable detergent lose their water-retention capacity.
Loop matting: the terry loops of the towel — the yarn loops that form the absorbent surface — can flatten and mat with incorrect laundering, losing the volume and softness the guest expects.
Premature colour fading: particularly in coloured towels or those with coloured stripes.
Fibre deterioration: in the long term, incorrect laundering destroys the cotton fibre from within.
Key Parameters for Washing Hotel Towels
Temperature: The Most Critical Parameter
60°C: the standard temperature in hospitality for bath towels in intensive use. At 60°C, most common bacteria and germs in bath towels are eliminated without significantly damaging standard cotton fabric. This is the optimal balance temperature for most establishments.
90°C: the enhanced sanitisation temperature, advisable in higher health-risk situations — gastroenteritis outbreaks, periods of high flu prevalence, towels with difficult biological stains. Washing at 90°C eliminates virtually all microorganisms but deteriorates fabric more quickly. Must not be the standard for routine laundering.
40°C: inadequate for hospitality. At 40°C, the elimination of fungi and bacteria in shared-use towels is not guaranteed. Only acceptable for special fabrics — bamboo, modal, microfibre — that do not tolerate higher temperatures.
30°C: only for very delicate special fabrics that expressly require it. Never for standard bath towels in hospitality.
Detergent: Type and Quantity
Detergent type: professional powder or liquid detergent with enzymes is most suitable for hotel towels. Enzymes break down organic matter — skin cells, sebum, body oils — that accumulates in towel fibres and cannot be removed by water alone.
Detergent with optical brightener: for white towels, detergent with optical brightener — not chlorine bleach — maintains bright whiteness without damaging fibres. An optical brightener is an agent that reflects ultraviolet light making the fabric appear whiter.
No fabric conditioner: fabric conditioner is the most frequent mistake in hotel towel laundering. Fabric conditioner coats cotton fibres with a silicone layer that initially makes the towel feel softer but progressively waterproofs the fibres, reducing absorbency. After 5–6 washes with fabric conditioner, a towel can have lost up to 30% of its absorbency.
Alternative to fabric conditioner: half a cup of white vinegar in the fabric conditioner compartment every 5–6 washes. Vinegar removes detergent and limescale residues that can make towels rougher without waterproofing the fibres. It leaves no smell on the towel once dry.
Spin Speed: Speed and Duration
Recommended speed: 800–1000 rpm for standard cotton towels. Above 1200 rpm the risk of fabric damage increases significantly. For more delicate fabrics — bamboo, modal — limit to 600–800 rpm.
Duration: standard spin cycle time in hotel industrial washing machines is sufficient to extract excess water without over-spinning. Do not extend the spin cycle to "save drying time".
Drying: Temperature and Time
Drying temperature: medium — between 60 and 70°C. High temperature speeds drying but deteriorates fabric. Too-low temperature leaves residual moisture that can generate odours.
Duration: until the towel is completely dry — without residual moisture at any point. A towel stored with residual moisture will develop mould and odours within hours, even in an apparently dry environment.
Dryer balls: adding 2–3 wool or rubber dryer balls to the tumble dryer improves towel aeration during drying, shortens the time needed and reduces loop matting. A minimal investment with real impact on result quality.
Most Frequent Mistakes in Hotel Towel Laundering
Using fabric conditioner at every wash: the most frequent error and the one with the greatest negative impact on absorbency.
Washing at the wrong temperature: too low to guarantee hygiene or too high for special fabrics.
Overloading the washing machine: towels need space to move in the machine. A load at 80–85% of maximum capacity produces better results than a 100% load.
Drying at too high a temperature: deteriorates fabric and can damage fibres irreversibly.
Storing towels without being completely dry: generates mould and odours that require re-washing and can permanently damage the fabric.
Not separating white towels from coloured ones: can generate progressive greying in white towels.

Laundering Frequency in Hospitality
Bath towels: change and launder at every guest check-out as a minimum. For longer stays, some hotels offer towel changes every 3–4 days — communicated to the guest via an environmental card. In any case, laundering is mandatory if there are visible stains, odour or a guest request.
Hand towels and bidet towels: same frequency as bath towels.
Pool towels: after every use, without exception. The combination of chlorine, sun cream and perspiration requires immediate laundering to prevent colour fading and fibre deterioration.
