Terry velour is one of the most common towel fabrics in hospitality and at the same time one of the most misunderstood. Its technical characteristics are frequently confused with those of classic double-loop terry. Yet the difference between the two fabrics is relevant from the perspective of the guest experience and durability in industrial laundering.

What Terry Velour Is: Technical Definition
Terry velour — also called single-face terry or velour terry — is a towel fabric in which the loops (the yarn loops that form the absorbent surface) are present only on one face of the fabric, while the other face is smooth. In classic double-loop terry, loops are present on both faces.
This structural difference has relevant technical consequences:
In terry velour: one face with loops (the absorbent side, the one in contact with skin) and one smooth face (which gives the towel its external appearance). The smooth face can receive prints, embroidery and finishing treatments not possible on the loop face.
In classic double-loop terry: loops on both faces. Greater total absorbency, more volume and softness, but without the possibility of the smooth face.
Advantages of Terry Velour in Hospitality
Cleaner and More Uniform Visual Appearance
The smooth face of terry velour has a more uniform, more contemporary and easier-to-maintain appearance than the classic loop face. It does not accumulate visible lint with laundering in the same way as double-loop terry, and maintains its appearance better over use and wash cycles. This is the main reason many contemporary design hotels prefer velour terry to standard double-loop terry.
Greater Ease of Embroidery and Personalisation
The smooth face of terry velour is the ideal surface for embroidery, prints and personalisation. The hotel logo embroidered on the smooth face is sharper, cleaner and more durable than the same embroidery on classic double-loop terry, where the embroidery thread can be lost between the loops or appear less legible.
This advantage is particularly relevant for hotels that personalise their towels with the establishment's logo: velour terry offers a noticeably superior embroidery surface.
Better Stacking and Room Presentation
Velour towels stack better and more evenly than double-loop terry towels because the smooth face allows pieces to rest on each other more stably. This facilitates room presentation — the classic stack of towels on the towel rail or bathroom shelf — and improves the sense of order the guest perceives on entering.
Faster Drying
Having only one face with loops instead of two, the velour towel is slightly thinner and lighter than a double-loop terry towel of equivalent weight, resulting in slightly faster drying after laundering.
Disadvantages of Terry Velour in Hospitality
Lower Absorbency Than Equivalent Double-Loop Terry
The absence of loops on one face reduces total absorbency compared to double-loop terry of equivalent weight. For standard bath towel use — drying the body after a shower — this difference is perceptible but not disqualifying if the weight is sufficient.
The general rule is that a velour terry towel needs a weight 50 to 100 g/m² higher than double-loop terry to offer equivalent absorbency. A 500 g/m² velour towel offers approximately the same absorbency as a double-loop terry towel of 400–450 g/m².
Less Softness to the Touch
Terry velour has a different feel from double-loop terry: smoother, less plush, with less perceived volume. For some guest segments — particularly those accustomed to high-quality double-loop terry — this feel may be perceived as less luxurious, though in contemporary design hospitality this is increasingly less relevant as the smooth feel is associated with modernity.
Recommended Weights for Hospitality
400–450 g/m²: The Basic Range
A velour towel of 400–450 g/m² is functional for standard use in mid-category hospitality.
500–550 g/m²: The Optimal Range
The 500–550 g/m² weight is the most suitable balance for mid-to-upper-category hospitality. This is the standard weight in 3- and 4-star hotels using velour terry.
600 g/m² or Above: The Premium Range
Velour towels of 600 g/m² or above offer absorbency and weight comparable to quality double-loop terry and are the standard in 5-star hotels and luxury establishments that prefer the velour finish for its superior presentation and ease of embroidery.
Velour Terry in the Complete Towel Set
If the hotel decides to use velour towels, it is advisable for the entire set to be consistent: bath towel, hand towel and bidet towel in the same towel type, the same weight and the same colour. A mixed set — velour terry for the bath towel and double-loop for the hand towel — creates visible differences in appearance and feel that the guest perceives negatively.
