Hotel gym towels have a completely different usage profile from bathroom or spa towels. In the gym, the towel is not used to dry the body after the shower: it is used during exercise, in direct contact with perspiration and with machine surfaces, and is carried frequently between different areas of the fitness space. This usage profile determines specific technical requirements that the standard bath towel does not optimally fulfil.

What Makes the Hotel Gym Towel Different
Use During Exercise, Not After Bathing
The fundamental difference between the gym towel and the bath towel is the context of use. The bath towel is used once, in a static position, to dry the clean body after a shower. The gym towel is used during exercise — to wipe perspiration from the face, neck and hands — and frequently serves as a hygiene barrier between the user's body and the machine surface.
This use implies:
Higher frequency of use per item. The same towel may be used repeatedly during a 45–60 minute workout.
Higher perspiration and bacterial load. Sweat is more concentrated and bacterial load greater than in standard shower use. Laundering protocols must be more rigorous.
Greater wear from friction. Repeated use against skin and machine surfaces generates more friction, accelerating fabric wear.
Self-Service: The Most Common Distribution Model
In most hotel gyms, towels are distributed on a self-service basis: the guest takes what they need on arrival, uses them during their workout and deposits them in used linen bins on leaving. This model means the stock available in the fitness area must be sufficient to cover peak hours without running out.
Formats: Size Matters in the Gym
Hand or Facial Towel (30x50 cm — 40x70 cm)
This is the most common format for hotel gym towels. Compact and lightweight, it is easy to carry during a workout, dries quickly and takes up little space both on the distribution trolley and in collection bins. It is sufficient for the primary gym use — wiping perspiration from the face and acting as a barrier on machines.
Medium Towel (50x90 cm — 50x100 cm)
The medium format is a more generous and versatile option: it suits both use during exercise and partial drying after a shower in the changing room. Some hotels offer this format in the gym so the guest can also use it in the post-workout shower without needing to return to their room.
Full Bath Towel (70x140 cm or larger)
This is not the recommended format for the fitness area due to its volume, weight and management cost. In luxury hotel gyms with attended service — where staff hand the towel directly to the guest — a larger towel may make sense, but in self-service distribution the large format complicates management and raises the operational cost without a proportionate benefit to the guest.
Materials: The Cotton vs Microfibre Dilemma in the Gym
Cotton: Absorbency and Durability
Cotton is the standard material in mid-to-upper-category hotel gym towels. Its absorbency is superior to microfibre for perspiration-related use, and its durability in repeated industrial laundering is well established.
The main drawback of cotton in the gym context is drying time: a cotton towel used during exercise takes longer to dry between uses than microfibre, which can be relevant in gyms with high guest turnover and tight laundering cycles.
Recommended weight for gym use: 400–500 g/m². Above 500 g/m² the towel is too heavy and bulky for fitness use; below 400 g/m² it may not be absorbent enough for an intense workout.
Microfibre: Quick Drying and Lightness
Microfibre has specific advantages in the gym context: it dries three to five times faster than cotton, accelerating the wash-dry-restock cycle. It is significantly lighter, making it easier to carry during a workout.
Its drawbacks: the feel of microfibre against sweaty skin can be less comfortable than cotton, and its durability in the high-temperature laundering needed for sweat hygiene may be lower than cotton's.
Cotton-Microfibre or Cotton-Bamboo Blend
Some mid-to-upper-category sports towels combine natural and synthetic fibres to balance absorbency and quick-drying properties. The most common blends are 70/30 or 60/40 cotton-microfibre.
Hygiene: The Critical Factor in Gym Towels
Gym towels are in contact with perspiration, bacteria and machine surfaces shared by multiple users. Hygiene protocols must be stricter than for guest room bath towels:
Minimum wash temperature: 60°C. For reinforced sanitisation cycles, 90°C. Microfibre towels do not tolerate temperatures above 60°C, which limits the intensity of sanitisation cycles.
Use of disinfectant in the wash cycle: advisable in high-footfall gyms, particularly during periods of increased prevalence of respiratory illnesses or skin infections.
Laundering frequency: daily as a minimum, with a complete stock change at the end of each day. In high-footfall gyms, a midday stock replenishment may be necessary.
Stock Management in Self-Service
Stock calculation: maximum gym capacity × 2–3 towels per active user × number of opening hours between replenishments. A hotel with a gym for 20 simultaneous users and 12 hours of opening requires a minimum operational stock of 120–180 gym towels.
Consumption control: some hotels opt for loan systems — the guest leaves a deposit or charges the towel to their room — to reduce uncontrolled consumption and losses from guests forgetting to return towels.
Safety stock: maintain a reserve stock of at least 50% of operational stock to cover peak days and delays in the laundering cycle.
